Introduction to Citizen Kane

Citizen Kane directed by Orson Welles in 1941, has been placed on numerous top movie lists and is considered one of the best American movies of all time. Although it flopped at the box office when it released, the movie is now seen as a classic. Pauline Kael notes, “Like most films of the sound era that are called masterpieces, Citizen Kane has reached its audience gradually over the years rather than at the time of release.”[1] Several details point to the reason for this, but being known as one of the greatest films encourages the importance of close detail when reviewing and researching the film.
